For most UAE buyers, the real decision is not "biometric or not", it is fingerprint or face. Both are proven. Both are widely deployed. Both cost different amounts of money and both fail on different workforces. This piece answers the choice honestly.
The short version
Choose fingerprint if:
- Your workforce is office-based with clean, undamaged hands.
- Budget matters and you want the lowest cost per door.
- Speed at the door is not critical (under 100-person shift changes).
Choose face recognition if:
- Your workforce has worn fingerprints from manual work.
- Hygiene matters (clinics, food handling, post-COVID offices).
- A large group arrives together and any queue is unacceptable.
- The terminal sits in a client-facing space where finish matters.
If you can afford it, a dual-method terminal (face + fingerprint on the same unit) removes the choice: each employee uses whichever works for them, and everyone has a backup.

Where fingerprint still wins
For an office of 30 to 100 people with clean hands and a normal morning arrival, a ZKTeco fingerprint terminal is the honest recommendation. It costs a fraction of a face terminal, it matches in about a second, and once enrolled it just works.
The classic UAE deployment: a wall-mounted fingerprint terminal at the main office door, one at the finance office, and the payroll module handling shift rules, overtime and WPS export. Total spend around AED 3,000 to 5,000 installed for a single-site office of 50, versus AED 8,000 to 12,000 for a face-recognition equivalent.
Where fingerprint loses badly
Three workforces where installing fingerprint is a mistake, even to save money:
Construction and heavy manual labour. Fingerprints wear smooth from concrete, steel and daily manual work. Enrolment sometimes succeeds; matching six months later frequently does not. On a site with 200 workers, if 15% cannot be read reliably, you have created a payroll dispute engine.
Kitchens and food handling. Wet hands, gloves and constant washing defeat fingerprint readers. Face or palm is the practical answer.
Clinics and laboratories. Beyond hygiene concerns, the shared surface is politically difficult in healthcare environments. Face recognition removes the question entirely.
Where face recognition wins
Beyond the cases where fingerprint fails, face recognition has three genuine advantages:
Speed at high-throughput doors. A ProFace X or FaceStation F2 clears about half a second per employee. A 200-person shift change through a single gate finishes without a queue. A fingerprint reader at that door will bottleneck.
Contactless. No shared surface. Post-2020 this stopped being a nice-to-have in healthcare, food and shared-office environments, it became a requirement.
Reception-grade appearance. Modern face terminals look right in a corporate reception. A wall-mounted fingerprint reader in the same space reads as industrial equipment, which may or may not matter to you.
Where face recognition still loses
Two things worth knowing before you specify face:
Direct sunlight is a problem. A face terminal facing a west-facing entrance in July will struggle. We position units perpendicular to the door and away from glare during the site survey; if a good position does not exist, we recommend fingerprint or a covered vestibule instead.
Enrolment is faster but templates are larger. A face template is a richer data structure than a fingerprint template. Terminal capacity is measured in thousands rather than tens of thousands, which matters for sites over about 3,000 users on a single terminal.
The honest recommendation
For most UAE buyers, the pragmatic path looks like this:
- SME office, 30–100 staff, clean hands, budget conscious: ZKTeco fingerprint at the door, payroll module, WPS export. Around AED 3,000–5,000 installed.
- SME office, hygiene matters, or high-throughput door: ZKTeco SpeedFace-V5L face terminal. Around AED 6,000–9,000 installed.
