Construction is where standard office attendance systems die. Fingerprints worn from concrete work. Gates in direct sun and dust. Workers arriving by bus from an accommodation an hour away. A regular indoor fingerprint terminal at the gate has usually failed within one summer.
This is what actually works for a UAE contracting site.
The three site-specific failures
Before the solution, the three things that make construction different from an office:
Fingerprint wear. Concrete, steel, welding, formwork, five years of manual site work rounds fingerprints smooth. On any experienced workforce, expect 15–30% to enrol with weak fingerprints, and expect matching failures at six months on those cases. Fingerprint-only enrolment on a construction workforce is a mistake that becomes visible on payroll day two months later.
Outdoor conditions. UAE summer runs 45–48°C, plus solar loading on a west-facing gate. Add dust, sandstorms twice a year, and the occasional rain wash-down. An indoor terminal in a plastic box does not survive a season. An IP65-rated outdoor unit is a specification, not a marketing claim.
Bus arrivals. Workers arriving from accommodation come off buses in blocks of 20–50 at once, at 06:15 or 06:30. Any queue at the gate delays the shift start. This is a throughput problem more than a hand-condition one.
The specification that works
For a UAE construction site of 100 to 500 workers, the honest specification is:
Palm recognition at the primary gate. ZKTeco ProFace X reads the palm-vein pattern rather than the fingerprint surface. It is unaffected by manual wear, and it clears about half a second per employee, fast enough to handle a bus arrival without a queue.
Face recognition as backup on the same terminal. For workers whose palms are wet or in gloves, face recognition works from a metre away. The ProFace X supports both on the same unit, so no separate hardware.
IP-rated outdoor mount. Positioned in shade where possible, perpendicular to the gate flow. Not in direct west-facing sun. Cabled with weather-sealed conduit.
Optional: RFID readers on the bus. For contractors running staff transport, a reader inside each bus records who boarded and where. This makes "in transit" a visible state before it becomes a missing worker on the site log.
Multi-site database. Every site's terminals report into one central database. Head office sees every site; foremen see their own site; per-site payroll rolls up to a single WPS-ready file.
Per-project cost allocation
Beyond attendance, construction wants cost accounting broken down by project. A worker on Project A this week and Project B next week needs their hours attributed correctly.
Two ways to handle this:
Terminal-level tagging. The worker selects the project on a terminal at check-in (usually via keypad or an on-screen prompt). The punch is tagged with the project ID and reports break hours down by project.
Supervisor-approved allocation. The worker punches normally; a foreman later assigns the hours to projects in the software. Suitable for sites where workers move between projects within a day.
Which one fits depends on how disciplined the site is about pre-shift briefing. On disciplined sites, terminal-level tagging works. On less-disciplined sites, supervisor-approved allocation is more reliable.
The MOHRE and safety angle
A construction site attendance record has two audiences beyond payroll:
MOHRE record-keeping. Timestamped biometric records of who was on site, when they arrived, when they left, and how many hours they worked. Stronger evidence than any paper trail if a dispute arises.
Safety and evacuation. In an emergency, knowing exactly who is currently on site matters. A live attendance dashboard tells the safety officer at 14:23 exactly who has checked in but not checked out, the current headcount.
Both are byproducts of a working attendance system. Neither requires extra hardware.
What accommodation tracking adds
For contractors housing workers in company accommodation, adding attendance-style tracking at the accommodation door provides:
- In/out records for accommodation curfew compliance.
- Bus boarding records for the morning departure.
- Visitor logging for accommodation compliance rules.
This is the same technology as gate attendance, deployed at a different door. It runs in the same software and reports in the same dashboard.
The specification for a specific example
A UAE contracting SME running one main gate at a project site with 150 workers, mostly manual labour with worn fingerprints:
